Meet your guide in York city centre. Begin your tour with a walking tour of this beautiful and historic walled city, known for its Roman and Viking heritage. Free time for lunch before departing for Thirsk, which was the inspiration for the original Darrowby. Visit to World of James Herriot; the fully restored site of James Herriot’s original home and veterinary practise (known in the books as Skeldale House) – the original TV series was also filmed here. Return to York to check in to hotel for overnight.
Breakfast. Depart hotel and head into the dales. Today you will visit the Wharfedale area which includes the village of Grassington - used as the village of 'Darrowby' in the current series, where James Herriot starts his new life - many local shops were transformed for the series. The local bakery and chocolatier became 'Darrowby Cycles', the gift shop transformed into 'Higgins Bakers' and the local bookshop stood in for the greengrocers. Photo opportunities outside the pub used for exterior shots of 'The Drover's Arms' before enjoying lunch inside. Visit to Bolton Abbey, including Barden Bridge – the bridge and the estate’s historic buildings and scenery have been used for many scenes and backdrops. Today will also include a visit to the farm which is used as Helen’s family farm. Return to York for overnight.
Breakfast. Today you will visit Wensleydale and Swaledale area, which was used in the filming for the original series. It is many of these locations you will see today that formed the original inspiration for the locations in Herriot’s books. Lunch include on this day. Return to York.
